CHRISTMAS may be over for another year but one little girl still had one surprise in store for her last week.

Jodie Cockburn (11) was chosen to be this year’s Torphichen Gala Queen Elect at a special school assembly in the local primary school and she couldn’t be more delighted.

She said: “I was shocked to be chosen but I’m excited and it will be a good opportunity to do a lot of stuff. I’ve already picked my dress - it’s really long, it’s nice and I like it.

“I need to create a speech and I’m a bit worried about that, but I’m looking forward to the day. All those who take part in the Gala Day come along to the Queen’s party at the community centre and that will be good.”

The P7 pupil will be helped on the day by her Lady-in-waiting and the Herald who are both good friends.

She added: “My family are excited. The whole village comes along to see me at my house on the day and wait for me to come out in my dress.”

It will be a busy few months ahead with rehearsals every Monday and dad Steven (43) will be decorating the house.

He said: “There is a lot of stuff to do but I’m looking forward to it - we will have to decorate the house - but it will be good fun.

“I’m really pleased for Jodie. I’m sure she will be very good at it. She’s really excited.”

The family who stay at Northgate also includes Thomas (13) and Millie (6) who will be a Flower Girl on the village’s 104th Gala Day on June 9.

One of Jodie’s duties will be to present the Citizen of the Year award to a local person voted for by the village, set up in memory of her mum Katrina Cockburn, who was well known in the village. For details of the Torphichen retinue see the District pages.
