Speed cameras out in force

SPEED cameras will used throughout Central Scotland and the Lothians this week.

From Monday, March 15, mobile cameras will be on the 1706 Linlithgow Road in Bo'ness, and the A993 Dean Road, Bo'ness.

Cameras will be situated throughout West Lothian, including Whitburn, Armadale, Deer Park, Lizzie Bryce, Breich and Polbeth.

Cameras will also be on the M9 at the M976 and at Polmont.

Central Scotland Safety Camera Partnership Manager, Neil MacSporran, said: "At CSSCP our job is about making our roads safer by encouraging drivers to change their behaviour behind the wheel. Sometimes these changes can be quite minor but they can be enough to make you a safer driver and help to reduce the number of collisions on our roads.

Know the speed limit for the road you are on, if in doubt read the Highway Code.

Start your journey early enough so that you don't need to speed to arrive on time.

Check your speedometer and your mirror regularly - it's as important to know what's happening to the rear as to the front.

Use your gears. Use a lower gear - 3rd gear in 30 mph, 4th gear in 40 mph limits.

Be aware of the environment around you; streetlights, pavements and houses all suggest 30 mph - however not always.

When you see the safety camera signs, a black camera on a white background, remember that this road has a history of collisions involving death and serious injury.

The speed limit is not a target. Just because the sign says 30 or 70, if the road or weather conditions are not safe, then you should not drive at that speed.

As you see a lower limit approaching begin to reduce your speed.

Keep your distance - don't forget the two-second rule."
