School fence bid to keep vandals at bay
FOLLOWING a summer of vandalism that has caused extensive damage to the school building, Springfield Primary in Linlithgow is putting up a security fence.
As reported in the Journal and Gazette over the summer, young people have been climbing onto the school roof in the evenings and at weekends, dislodging and damaging the slates. Due to heavy rainfall, the school year began with substantial water damage and flooding in classrooms and offices, where water had come in through the roof.
West Lothian Council have decided to erect security fencing around the school before any more repairs are carried out.
A West Lothian Council spokesman said: "Springfield Primary School has had a number of incidents where youths are climbing on to the roof.
This is both dangerous for the individuals and is causing damage to the property.
"As a result of this ongoing irresponsible action it has been necessary to secure the building with a fence."
The fencing will be similar to that used around other school buildings in West Lothian. Head teacher Linda Simpson said: "Although one or two people have expressed some concern with regard to the appearance of the fencing, the health and safety of our children is the number one priority and we cannot have classrooms with damaged ceilings and damp carpets.
"It is my hope that we will all work together to think of positive ways to enhance the appearance of the fencing as we have already proved we can do in our Supergrounds area in the back playground."
The school has kept the Parent Council advised of the issues and local police have urged local residents and neighbours to contact them if they see anything suspicious in the area.
