Falkirk Council’s budget

A FREEZE on rents and council tax, £690,000 to tackle youth unemployment, no compulsory redundancies and a boost for roads maintenance were approved at Falkirk Council’s budget meeting on Wednesday.

Money-saving measures include mothballing tourist attraction Birkhill Clay Mine for a year, sharing headteachers in some smaller primary schools, and a 10 per cent cut in Scottish Railway Preservation Society funding in Bo’ness.

Labour council leader Craig Martin said: “This administration’s budget is a budget for growth, working all across the area, in every corner of every community to create and protect jobs and then to nurture them.”

But the SNP opposition branded it “the last cynical and dishonest act of a discredited administration” ahead of May’s local elections.
