Bid to raise money for village reservoir

BASIC needs was the topic at Deanburn Primary School's weekly assembly this week.

And the needs do not come much more basic than that for a regular supply of clean water.

Which is where the school's Primary 5 pupils and their teacher Grace Hilditch come into the equation.

Following a highly educational two weeks in Peru last summer, Grace has been working towards raising 8000 to build a reservoir for the remote Andean mountain village of Huandar.

Last term, her class's enterprise project included a bring and buy sale which raised 550 for the charity Peru's Challenge.

This week the pupils put their art skills to the test to draw up an information leaflet which will be distributed at Grace's latest fund-raising effort, a tartan and tiaras ball in Whitburn's Hilcroft Hotel on March 8.

Guest of honour at the ball is BBC Scotland weather girl, Gail McGrane. Grace and Gail have been best friends since they met at primary school in Dingwall.

Said Grace: "Basically, I pinched the idea from Gail who ran a similar event last year for CHAS!

"Needs don't come much more basic than clean water and, at the moment, villagers in Huandar face a one kilometre uphill trek to the nearest water supply. That's a long way to go for just two pails of water!"

Special guests at the charity ball and raffle will be personalities from the Scottish football world and even a few members of the Glasgow Rangers squad are rumoured to be attending.

Top prize in the auction is a week-long stay in an Italian villa whilst Best Western Hotels has put up a number of free food and accommodation packages.

Grace's husband Colin, owner of the Hilcroft Hotel, is doing the catering at cost to help boost the fund and the wine will be sponsored by Matthew Clark wine merchants.

Added Grace: "Obviously it was much easier for me to organise an event of this scale with Colin already having all the contacts within the hotel trade.

"It's going to be a great night and I believe my target of 8000 is more than achieveable through this one big event.

"It's been great to have my pupils involved too because it's opened their eyes to the plight of Third World countries."
