50 years ago*A former miner at Kinneil Colliery, Bo'ness, was sent to jail for 18 months after pleading guilty to charges including theft and possessing house breaking tools, gelignite and a capped fuse.
*Work on the two 500ft main towers of the Forth Road Bridge will begin in May. The foundations are making progress and part of the base for the main towers will be on the Mackintosh Rock remains.
*People in Scotland are losing their native tongue according to Robert Robertson, headmaster of Bo'ness Public School, speaking at the Bo'ness Townswomen's Guild Burns Supper.
*A road improvement programme has been approved by Linlithgow Town Council. A new road with footpath from Royal Terrace to Preston Avenue past the Tannery will cost £3500, and the road and footpaths in Preston Park have been estimated at £2640.
*The highlight of the RL Rae Cup tie between Linlithgow Rose and West Calder was the return to form of centre-forward Willie Inch of the Rose who found the net three times in Linlithgow's 5-3 win.
25 years ago*Bo'ness twins Gary and Graeme Miller (11) are hoping to be right "on cue" in the National Boys' Club Pool Championship in Dundee against 300 clubs. They won gold and silver medals at the Fife and Central Boys' Club Championships.
*Tenants in the controversial Gateside Estate in Kirkliston are demanding cash loans to install coal-fired heating systems in their homes. They have suffered huge heating bills since electric ceiling heating was introduced 17 years ago.
*Bo'ness library's community room looks like "Joe's Cafe" according to the community council. Pauline Simpson said she was ashamed to invite people in and it was a bad advert for the District Council.
*Linlithgow Bridge community council is campaigning to have a centuries-old right-of-way re-established. Residents are determined to win back the Braewell Road which led to the village's well and to nearby mills.
*After four weeks' postponement, the Scottish Junior Cup third round tie was a big anti-climax for Bo'ness United fans. The team was unrecognisable as they went down 1-0 to Benburb.
