Help for hedgehogs

THE Scottish SPCA is urging the public to call its animal helpline on 03000 999 999 if they find a hedgehog during the winter.

Staff at the charity’s Fife Wildlife Rescue Centre have been caring for 40 creatures, most of which are too small to survive outside during the cold weather.

Hedgehogs should now be hibernating but some did not store up the necessary body fat in time, or are from late litters.

If you find one, place it - using gardening gloves or a thick towel - in a secure box with fresh water and tinned cat food until the SSPCA arrives.
