Take a trip down memory lane

WITH stars in their hands and pretty in white, young girls from Kirkliston dressed up for their biggest day of the year.

These same young girls will be turning 50 this year and will be able to look back with fond memories at this scene from June 1964.

Proud dad Joe W. Henderson of 41 Maitland Road, Kirkliston, pointed out that the fairy looking at the camera is his middle daughter Sin (Gaelic for Jean) Henderson with her friend Catherine Muirhead, and he was interested to know if any of the others would be recognised by readers.

50 years ago

Crowning this year's Bo'ness Fair Queen will be Winifred Gould of Broompark, Kelty Avenue, Bo'ness. Mrs Gould is the wife of George Gould, head of the art department at Bo'ness Academy.

An eight-year-old Bo'ness boy, oldest in a family of six, appeared at Bo'ness Police Court and plead guilty to stealing a purse from a pram on South Street in April. It contained money, cooperative tokens, a key and stamps.

At the annual prize giving for nurses at Bangour General Hospital, nurse Helen J. L Lamond (21) of Clarendon Cottages, Linlithgow, was given a gold medal for best all-round nurse.

The house at 120 High Street, Linlithgow, known as The Spanish Ambassador's House, is likely to be taken down as part of the High Street Development Scheme. It is thought a Spanish emissary stayed there on a secret mission to discuss an alliance between the Spanish throne and Mary Queen of Scots.

In a league game at Newtown Park, Bo'ness and Fauldhouse played 90 minutes of uninspired football and finished goalless.

25 years ago

Linlithgow's chronic car parking problem will be eased with a 50-space car park planned at the Regent Centre. It will be aimed at the long stay parker and commuters creating havoc in the main Regent Centre parking area.

Scott Bernard, a P7 pupil at Linlithgow Primary, won 500 writing about pork. Scott (12) won the award by producing a book on all aspects of pork in Britain, from pig farming right through to cooking.

nA Bo'ness company has won a 27,000 contract to supply cannon to Edinburgh Castle. Bo'ness Iron Company will make 14 early 19th century replica cannon.

Hundreds of people will cross the Forth Bridge on foot as many times as possible to raise money for the world's homeless. The Bridge Game, organised by Christian Aid, is one of their biggest fundraising drives.

The glory run continued for Linlithgow when they picked up their second trophy in four days at Central Park, Whitburn. A classy performance ensured they retained the Fife and Lothians Cup, sponsored by Radio Forth. In a splendid performance to overcome a plucky Star side the Rose took it 3-0.
