Junior Opera at St Michael's Church

THIS dramatic photo was taken at Mr Fleming's junior opera in Linlithgow, around 1949/1950. Mr Fleming was the school music teacher and organist at St Michael's.

We are indebted to Mrs Dolina Law (nee Wood), sister of the late Gazette reporter Vic Wood, for handing in this photo.

Avon Paper Mill, Linlithgow Bridge, which closed a fortnight ago, is officially to re-open on Sunday night. It is hoped all former employees will return.

Last Wednesday, the fire brigade was called out to deal with a blaze on a passing goods train in Linlithgow. An oil lamp in the guard's van had gone on fire. Staff managed to quell the outbreak.

The first big event of the season will be on Monday week in Bo'ness Town Hall when the arts council will present "Spanish Serenade".

Bo'ness is getting a selection of productions second to none thanks to the enthusiasm of the arts council organiser.

The newly-formed West Lothian County Ladies' Hockey Club defeated I.C.I. Grangemouth 7-3 last Saturday.

The first team from the Mid and East section to visit Newtown Park this season – Thorntree United – caused a sensation when they forced a 2-2 draw in the first round of the East of Scotland Cup.

In the first round of the East of Scotland Cup, Linlithgow Rose dismissed Preston Athletic 3-1.

40 years ago - from our files of 26 September 1969

Linlithgow Tennis Club, which opened in 1968, has been told that its courts at Boghall have been sold to a building firm and they must vacate the premises by the end of the year.

On a point raised by some of his constituents, Tam Dalyell MP has approached St Andrew's House on the shortage of mathematic teachers at Bo'ness Academy.

Miss M. Balfour, chairwoman, and Miss M. Dodds, secretary of the local group of the "Save the Children Fund" have been invited to meet Princess Anne at Gosford House, Linlithgow, on Saturday.

South Queensferry's Rosebery Hall was the host for Glasgow Transport Orchestra's show "Show Band Show". The audience were then invited to sing along by the 30-piece orchestra.

Despite the rain, Linlithgow Rose defeated Sauchie at Prestonfield by an impressive five goals in the Brown Cup first round replay last Saturday.

Coasting along with 10 minutes of the match remaining and two goals in front, Bo'ness had to fight to take the points home from Whitburn after letting in a late goal.
