Girlguiding in 1963
AS GUIDING celebrates its centenary this year, this week's Peep at the Past, harks back to Guides in Linlithgow from more than 40 years ago.
The photograph was kindly submitted by Mrs Joyce Somerville, a Friend of Guiding in Linlithgow.
It features a special get-together of all groups, from Brownies, Guides to Ranger Guides, at the old Linlithgow Academy, now Low Port Primary.
It is thought the photograph dates back to around in 1963.
Pictured are District Commissioner at the time, Eileen Reid, along with Guide leader Margaret Thompson and the late Mary Salmond, mother of Scotland's First Minister Alex.
If you have an old photograph you think would be of interest to our readers, send it with details to our office at 114 High Street, Linlithgow. Pictures are returned following publication.

*The rescue of two tiny tots from drowning at the boating pier at the Loch draws attention to the need for safeguards. The parapet round the Loch should be high enough to keep children aged up to five on the right side of it - currently it is only a few inches above footpath level.
*Donald Lothian (19) from Bridgend left for a new life in Australia this week. The village gave a grand send off for Donald who has worked with Peter Waddell of Park Farm since leaving school. He is a grandson of Dan Steven who was official starter at North Berwick golf course.
*Bo'ness has had an extraordinary amount of fog recently but there is no truth in the rumour that a local choirmaster spent two hours hounding down the local foghorn explaining that he "just had to get hold of that wonderful bass."
*Armadale Thistle played host to Bo'ness United in the first round of the Thornton Shield. In torrential rain, Bo'ness struggled in the quagmire, sometimes with only nine men and it ended 2-2. In the same competition Linlithgow Rose went down 3-1 to Stoneyburn, heavy rain making the ball difficult to control. It was new right-back Matthew Watson's debut for the Rose.

*Linlithgow Rose have fined and banned four players until the end of the season and recommended that the SJFA ban them for life. The Rose slapped suspensions on Tommy Reston, Alex Gardner, John Grant and Eric Black after they failed to turn up for the replay of the first round Scottish Cup-tie at Cumbernauld.
*As of Monday until the end of January, local schools will start at 9.30am due to extended darkness created by the introduction of British Standard Time. Primaries affected will include Blackness, Bridgend, Dalmeny and Linlithgow.
*A search light will be erected at Allison Park, Kirkliston to deter courting couples who have been giving police the slip.
*A power failure in Bo'ness on Sunday cut off the heating system in Carriden Parish Church during the morning service. By the evening service it still wasn't working, so blankets were collected and distributed.
*There were numerous four letter words flying around Ravenswood, Cumbernauld on Saturday after the four Rose players failed to show. Despite a 4-2 defeat, the lads were said to have played well.
