75 this year from Bo'ness Public School

THE Bo'ness Public School pupils pictured in this photo will all be marking their 75th birthdays this year – and Nancy Findlay (nee Buchanan) of Dean Road, is one of them.

Nancy, pictured in the second row, second from the left, was 75 on Wednesday, and is pictured with her friends in Miss Marshall's qualifying class (11 plus) around 1946 when they were all around 10 years old.

From our files of April 22, 1960

*Provost Merker said at the annual meeting of Linlithgow Rose FC that if wealthy senior clubs continued taking players before they had entered junior football, then the Scottish Junior Football Association would need to raise the age of prospective come-backs to junior football or junior football would be doomed.

*Margaret K Hunter (12) of 10 Listloaning Road, Linlithgow Bridge, has been chosen as Queen for Linlithgow Children's Gala Day on Saturday July 2. Margaret from the Public School is popular with her schoolmates and the committee are confident she will credit her community.

*The county education committee decided that schools should not be let for dances, there will be a holiday for Princess Margaret's wedding on May 6 and ball point pens will be banned from exams.

*Twelve applications were received for the post of dining room assistant at St Margaret's RC School and local lady Margaret Sweetman was appointed.

*Any hopes Bo'ness United nurtured of retaining the West Section title disappeared completely at Fauldhouse on Saturday when they went down by three goals to one in a league game that never rose above mediocrity.

25 years ago

From our files of April 25, 1985

*Edinburgh council planners have blocked a move to build luxury flats at the former gasworks site on Queensferry's foreshore. It will please local residents who are trying to block the controversial scheme.

*Work is now in progress on the Forth Road Bridge's biggest maintenance operation since it opened in October 1964. The bridge's road surface is being relaid in a multi-million pound operation that will last more than a year.

*During the next few weekends volunteers will construct a floating island on Linlithgow Loch to provide a safe nesting place for wildfowl. Lothians Conservation Volunteers made a similar construction on the loch three years ago.

*Falkirk Council has thrown out a petition from Bo'ness tenants because of lack of money. 40 tenants from Newtown wanted the council to repair their fences and gates because they fear youngsters could wander onto the road, and be injured or killed.

*Linlithgow Rose coach Jimmy Crease gave a one-off five star performance when he was forced to fill in during the Radio Forth cup semi-final against Glenrothes.
